NASA System-Wide Safety project retained as an archive
NASA states that the System-Wide Safety project has concluded and its page is no longer being updated. The wider IASMS research concept continues through publications and related work, but older project descriptions should not be reported as a current programme.
IASMS explored for increasingly autonomous wildland firefighting
NASA research applied IASMS functions to a demanding multi-operator environment. It is evidence of continued concept development—not proof of certified or general operational deployment.
Simulation and flight experiments examined how monitoring, assessment and mitigation capabilities could work together. The report describes experimental progress within defined research conditions.

A national research agenda is established
The National Academies recommended approaching real-time system-wide safety assurance through an IASMS that monitors, assesses and supports or initiates mitigation. The report identified research priorities and unresolved technical, policy and organisational questions.
NASA researchers described an IASMS Concept of Operations for Advanced Air Mobility, helping translate the research agenda into roles, functions and system interactions.
NASA material set out the relationship between IASMS, emerging operations and the progression from reactive and proactive processes toward more timely predictive capability.
A Concept of Operations addresses Upper Class E airspace
NASA research applied IASMS concepts to Upper Class E traffic management. This is a specific operational research context, not a generic description of IASMS evolution across all aviation.
Research tests whether available data are fit for purpose
NASA researchers assessed IASMS-relevant data sources—an important reminder that timely analysis still depends on data quality, coverage and operational meaning.

Clarifications · 16 September 2026: Earlier “research-stage only” wording was too broad. This edition distinguishes demonstrated IASMS research, related industry capabilities and unverified deployment claims. The NTRS record 20220017804 is now correctly described as an IASMS Concept of Operations for Upper Class E airspace rather than a generic IASMS-evolution paper. Three historical publication dates and the ASTM work-item status remain subject to confirmation.
